NEWBORNS

mutual gaze

Not that long ago it was believed that babies were unable to see for the first 6 weeks of life. We now know this to be very untrue. Instead from the moment a baby is born they begin looking around their new world. Their most favourite thing to look at is your face and the faces of those closest to them.

When your baby is gazing at your face, often quite intently, and they see you watching them and gazing back with joy and love, this is called mutual gaze. Mutual gaze does wonderful things to your babies developing brain.
